<<I guess I've read, come to think of it, some hardboiled fiction where
there's drug use, but it never did the same thing as drinking. Alcohol
does something very different to the text.>>

Like, it soaks it. By the way, your reference to "the text" and
"signifying" betrays your academic vintage. We have a good mix here in
this fine establishment. Just don't bring up Oncle Derrida and
"differance" or coats may flare open and roscoes crop up suddenly.

To stay on topic, I recently re-read Jonathan Latimer's _Headed for a
Hearse_, a beautifully written hardboiled locked-room mystery (this book
is proof that there is such a thing!) reprinted by IPL with the rest of
Latimer's novels. Latimer's PI Bill Crane is another heavy drinker to
add to the mix. He's kind of proud of it.

As to non-drinking PIs, Sue Grafton's Millhone doesn't drink too often.
I am not sure if Pronzini's Nameless still does or not - I seem to
recall that he quit at some point in this very long series. Is anyone up
to date on Nameless's adventures?
