I've never had a gun pointed at me and I hope I never do. And I doubt
I'd act like any of the heroes in these books should that terrible thing
occur. I am not embarassed to say I don't live a hardboiled life,
wouldn't want to. But what has that got to do with these books? Wasn't
Ned Fleming the one who claimed this stuff was just pulp and shouldn't
be taken as literature or real life?

I enjoy visiting the hardboiled world (at a mediated distance), but I
wouldn't want to live there.
