Being colloquial doesn't have much to do with it, in my
opinion. Tough
(and sometimes cynical) would describe many hardboiled
characters. Gutman does not speak the vernacular but is about
as tough as they come. Parker, perhaps the ultimate
hardboiled type, doesn't indulge in a lot of street talk,
either. But then, he barely talks...
