That is scary about Barnes and (Ig)Noble.
The rumor about George (supposedly first made public in a
Dennis McMillan newsletter) is that he is getting publisher
pressure to tone down (or lose) the "social content" and
write straight, plot-driven thrillers. Personally, I always
thought it was the social content that made a Pelecanos novel
a Pelecanos novel.
Oh, and I forgot one of my favorite writers in my earlier
list, Jack O'Connell.
