RARA-AVIS: Aleister Crowley

John Williams mentioned Aleister Crowley.

************ I read his CONFESSIONS many years ago, and then years later read a biography that mentioned the code phrases he used referring to specific sexual acts.

Among other things, he was one of the first mountaineers to use crampons instead of arduously cutting steps into the ice. I believe he made an early run quite a ways up K2 with Oskar Eckenstein.

After squandering a family fortune, the Beast 666, as he liked to be called, died an impoverished drug addict.

Hemingway makes a passing reference to him in his A MOVEABLE FEAST, with someone whispering about the most evil man in the world as he walks past a Paris restaurant.
