I think the compassion, sensitivity and growing social
awareness of Lew Archer are definitely reflected in private
eyes of the last thirty or so years like Dan Fortune, Elvis
Cole, Spenser
(particularly the early novels), V.I. Warshawski, Dave
Brandstetter and Pronzini's Nameless, among others. And Sue
Grafton certainly cared enough about Macdonald to cast her
series in Santa Teresa, Macdonald's name for Santa
Barbara.
