Some noir music:
Most of Warren Zevon' s songs ("I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" is
a useful 2-CD compilation - it also includes "Seminole
Bingo", co-written with Carl Hiaasen); All of Stan Ridgway's
songs (reference albums: "The Big Heat", Mosquitos",
"Anatomy"); Some of John Hiatt's tunes (a very good album
with some noirish tunes -
"Tennessee Plates", for instance - is "Slow Turning", from
1988);
Morphine were a great noir group, IMHO. A
"country-noir-lounge" group such as the "Friends of Dean
Martinez" (from Tucson, AZ) are making some great music, also
IMHO.
Just scratching the surface, anyway.

Can anyone suggest some noir songs to me? (Noir by whatever
definition works
for you, that is.) There's a hell of a lot of music out there
that is doomy,
but I don't think I'd call Nirvana noir, for example. Angst
and psychic pain
thing are there alright, but it doesn't feel noir to me. The
singer/musician
has to cope with the bad shit in a certain way for it to be
noir.
British readers will hopefully forgive me for this, but the
one example of a
noir song I keep coming back to is "No Regrets" by...
[ahem]... Robbie Williams. The feeling is there in the music
and the lyrics are totally screwed, and past the point of
caring. Listen to it, you'll see what I mean.
