They're not detective novels, but the works of Leonardo
Sciascia are as dark and hardboiled as they come.
Unfortunately, I don't know what's available in translation.
He doesn't seem to be mentioned very often in the US literary
press (in the press I read, at least). Very gutsy
stuff.
