    Altman was always famous for using a script merely as a starting point and relying primarily on the improvisational skills of his actors. That is why he tended to work with the same actors over and over, knowing he could trust them to deliver time and time again.

    In any case, I imagine Brackett was hired because of her work on The Big Sleep.
