    He's not just "noir," he's also hard-boiled. Anyone who has read CANNERY ROW, TORTILLA FLAT and of, course, EAST OF EDEN, can attest to that.

    And as "noir" as OF MICE AND MEN is, it's positively sunny when compared to one of the finest novels ever written by an American, THE GRAPES OF WRATH.
