    Yes, unfortunately, as well as various other decades that happened again and again in the course of history. Why do people believe that "it can't happen here", despite the overwhelming historical evidence that anything does happen anywhere? Is it a delusion? A problem with the time-scale of a person's lifetime?

    Orwell posed the problem of why people believe things despite overwhelming and easily available evidence to the contrary... it's a central problem.
