    Brian, how about this, I'll choose to have the conversations I want to, but if they're too narrow for your taste and you'd like to have a broader or different conversations with the group, my advice, go for it.

    Sandra, I got a bit off trail---I was originally talking about real noir(noir that fits my more narrow definition which coincides pretty much with Jack Bludis's "screwed" definition), and somehow got onto darker fiction. I'll stick with my original observations about NY and their resistance to noir (as I define it, and which I said, they might very rightfully have good reason be resistant to it--even if they want to market everything as noir). That's not saying they don't ever publish noir or dark crime fiction, just that from my own observations they seem much more resistant to it. About your observations that publishing is no different than it was 50 years ago, well that's clearly not true. 50 years ago you had large publishing houses, now these same houses are part of gigantic conglomerations, with headquarters for at least one of them housed in Europe. And then you have the large retailers like Walmart, Costco, Target and the changes they've brought. And now the changes ebooks are bringing. IT's definitely a different world for them and the dynamics have changed dramatically. What would be interesting, and I'd love for many reasons to see a study on this, is how have readers' taste changed over the last 50 years? Are we all anomalies here on rara avis still digging noir crime fiction, while the rest of the world has moved on??

That book was Fifty Grand by Adrian McKinty. You talk of small press books selling in the hundreds, well Adrian's book probably sold that much and look at who he was with. How about someone like John McFetridge who has been bent over by larger forces a couple of times in recent years. Would these guys have been better off with a Bleak House or a Tyrus? Its not finding a big house its finding the right house.
