I too read Roger Smith's MIXED BLOOD based on Dave Z's recommendation and enjoyed it.
It is one of the more brutal books I've read in a while. Maybe less so in the actions in the book, but more in the hopelessness and despair of many of the characters. This is not a criticism
The only real misstep for me was making the corrupt cop also a religious zealot. That's the kind of character I've encountered before, and it made him seem like just a character--a stark contrast to the fully-human portrayal of others in the book, particularly Benny.
