Sid's carried the ball (an inappropriate sports metaphor, now that I think about it, since he's an ex-jockey) in four novels. ODD AGAINST (1966), an Edgar nominee; WHIP HAND (1979), an Edgar winner; COME TO GRIEF (1995), another Edgar-winner (the first time two books about the same series character won the Edgar for Best Novel); and UNDER ORDERS (2006).
He was also featured in a TV series called THE RACING GAME, starring Mike Gwilym as Sid, an early offering on PBS's MYSTERY!
And he wasn't a "sort of" private eye. Once an injury forced him out of the sport, he became a full-fledged, professional private investigator.
