I just heard from Al Collins that Stuart Kaminsky, the creator of Hollywood PI Toby Peters, Moscow cop Porfiry Rostnikov, Chicago cop Abe Lieberman, and Florida process server and unlicensed PI Lew Fonesca, passed away.
Critically, or at least in terms of acclamation by his mystery-writing peers, Rostnikov was probably his most successful character. He got an Edgar nomination for the second Rostnikov novel BLACK KNIGHT IN RED SQUARE, another for the short story "Snow" depicting Rostnikov as a rookie beat cop, and the Edgar itself for the fifth noel in the series, A COLD RED SUNRISE. The final Rostnikov novel is due to be released early in 2010.
Kaminsky was a film buff, and was a professor of film studies at Northwestern University before moving to Florida and becoming a full-time writer. His series abotu Toby Peters, Hollywood PI during the Golden Age of Movies, reflects his love of the medium.
Despite his move to Florida, he loved the Chicago area and his Abe Lieberman procedurals reflect this.
And the Lew Fonesca series provided a way for his to depict his adopted state.
A good writer and a very nice man. He'll be missed.
