    Oddly, I was just discussing this phrase with a friend over the weekend, the catalyst being the highly regarded Spanish Harlem coming-of-age novel "Por estas calles bravas," by Piri Thomas, translated into English as DOWN THESE MEAN STREETS.  Is Chandler in fact the originator of the phrase, which has been adopted (and parodied) so widely?
