How can a cat be noir? They always get away with stuff. A cat gets in with a sexy dame and hatches a plan to knock off her husband, he's gonna pull it off. Or if he doesn't, he'll still come up smelling of roses somehow. That ain't noir!
Your dog, OTOH, he's got defeat written all oveer his face. They embark on all kind of exciting schemes but run out of brains halfway through the execution. Or get duped by a bitch on heat. Then they get castrated. Man, that's pretty noir.
