That reminds me: far and away the most disturbing book I've ever read about child abduction/abuse is Sabine Dardenne's I CHOOSE TO LIVE. This was written by a Belgian girl who was abducted from her bicycle on her way to school. She was held in a bunker under an abandoned house for months and used as a sex slave. Two other little girls held by the same sociopath died of starvation when he left them for a two week vacation. Dardenne's survival is a testament to her extreme courage and intelligence. Now if she can only regain a normal life!

Apparently Belgium, for a comparatively small country, has an unusual number of girl abductions to the extent that law enforcement has been operating with the idea that there may be organized crime or sex cult involvement. This did not prove true in the Dardenne case. That perpetrator could not possibly have been involved in all the cases of this type of crime throughout Belgium. The alternative theory may therefore be even more disturbing.

The modern equivalent of Struwwelpeter would be Edward Gorey. His stories are deliciously macabre and timeless. 'Amphigorey' is a good place to start. A different kind of noir altogether ...

And of course that leads to MYSTIC RIVER, which deals mostly with the

after-effects on adults of the trauma faced as a child in situations such as

    these.
