John,
Your question is a perfect setup for me to suggest Don Herron's new book,
The Dashiell Hammett Tour: Thirtieth Anniversary Guidebook. It includes a
new preface by Dashiell's daughter, Jo Hammett, and an introduction by
Charles Willeford. (Not done via Oujia board; it's a newspaper story
Willeford wrote about Don's tour.)
Don starts the book with a short, entertaining bio of Hammett. The tour
portion provides maps and written directions to visit every known place
Hammett lived in San Francisco, where he worked as a Pinkerton's dick, the
majority of locations in The Maltese Falcon, and several Continental Op
locations.
The new edition is updated based on recent Hammett research findings, and
features nearly twice as many photos as the prior edition, including rare
photos from the Hammett family collection. For more info, check out
