    Just for fun, let's see what other crime writers are Iowa Writers Program alums.

    For one, Max Phillips, author of the Shamus-winning FADE TO BLONDE (and visionary art director who designed the look of Hard Case Crime).

    For another, Max Allan Collins, whom I don't recall anyone describing as an excessively nose-in-the-air literary type.

    My tentative conclusion: Iowa only breeds insufferable artistes, unless their name is "Max."
