I'd be amazed if most Americans have ever heard of Gainsbourg, except
maybe as a one hit wonder ("Je T'Aime (Moi Non Plus)," which never even
reached the top 40). Sure he's got a cult following, but even that was
mostly associated with the highly ironic lounge set who also fetishized
the likes of Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman. Even the more recent
Gainsbourg tribute compilations and covers are mostly British and/or
Australian.
