I have to say, have you read Geofffrey O'Brien's HARDBOILED AMERICA? If I start trying to tell you how good it is I'll be writing this post for another couple hours at least.

I would like to read some non-fiction books about crime fiction. I'm kind of burned out on novels at the moment, and I'm looking for a change of pace. What works of criticism, history or biography would you recommend that focus on crime fiction, particularly 20th Century American crime fiction?
