I was concerned about that after reading the first chapter, and got a couple of Yiddish references from the library before continuing. But in the event I didn't use them much and I don't think they were really necessary.

Chabon seems to be big on confluences of Jewishness and popular fiction. His highly entertaining subsequent book "Gentlemen of the Road" features two medieval swordsmen, one of them an Ethiopian Jew, the other a European, and is reminiscent of the Fritz Leiber Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser stories. Chabon notes in an afterword that his working title was "Jews With Swords."
