    John suggested (among others):

"IN A LONELY PLACE by Dorothy Hughes"

Is that really a Hollywood novel? Yes, it's set in LA, and Dix even goes to a movie theater in Hollywood, but it doesn't really deal with the movie industry, unlike the movie (loosely) adapted from it. Dix claims to be an author in the book, not the screenwriter he was in the movie.
