Sara Gran's DOPE is a very disturbing novel. At the end, you
feel like you've had your ass kicked. Jim Thompson's AFTER
DARK, MY SWEET makes you cringe all the way through it. In
Tana French's IN THE WOODS you want to say to her lead
detective, Rob Ryan, "Just sit down and don't do anything.
Don't make that phone call! Let this thing play itself out,
you idiot!" Of course he doesn't listen and the result is a
very disturbing book.
