call GONE WITH THE WIND a noir novel. Scarlett is the 19th
Century prototype of MILDRED PIERCE, although she's smarter
and less easily conned than Mildred. Then there's a bunch of
Frank Yerby novels like THE FOXES OF HARROW & FAIROAKS
that are absolutely 19th Century noir. And there's Paul I.
Wellman's books like THE IRON MISTRESS, with very noir plot
lines and resolutions.
