Those of us who participate in Celebrity Deathwatches knew
this. I came very close to picking Dassin for my "team" this
year (14 picks). I choose my celebrities on the basis of
their contributions to the arts and other worthy endeavors
plus extreme longevity, and I like to feature a balance of
professions. Dassin was aced out by a couple of older
directors, Manoel de Oliveira (still active at 99!) and Jean
Delannoy (turned 100 in January). Here's my complete
list:
1. *Elliott Carter -- American composer
(99)*
2. *Boris (Y)Efimov -- Russian cartoonist
(107)*
3. *Manoel de Oliveira -- Portuguese film
director (99)*
4. *Luise Rainer -- German actress
(98)*
5. *Magda Olivero -- Italian singer
(98)*
6. *Norman Corwin -- American radio
dramatist (97)*
7. *Claude Levi-Strauss -- French
anthroplogist (99)*
8. *Jacques Barzun -- French-American
historian (100)*
9. *Miep Gies -- Dutch protector of Anne
Frank (99)*
10. *Phyllis Whitney -- American mystery
novelist (104, died Feb. 8)*
11. *Run Run Shaw -- Hong Kong film
producer (100)*
12. *Oscar Niemeyer -- Brazilian architect
(100)*
13. *Jean Delannoy -- French film director
(100)*
14. *Edward Upward -- British novelist
(104)*
