Mark,
Re your question below:
"I'm with Mario here. I thought Crichton wrote bestselling
medical thrillers. (Wait, did he write Andromeda Strain? I
did read that.) Did he write any crime fiction under his own
name? Or just as Lange?"
Crichton has written crime fiction under his own name
(RISING SUN), as John Lange (he got an Edgar nomination in
the PBO categogy for GRAVE DESCEND, IIRC), and at least once
as "Jeffrey Hudson" (the name for which he was awarded the
1968 Edgar for Best Novel, A CASE OF NEED).
He may have written crime fiction under other names as
well.
Trivia note. One of his "John Langes," a rather tidy thriller
called BINARY, was made into a TV-movie in the '70's.
Crichton directed the film version under his own name.
