****************************************************** That's a slightly simplistic analysis. From THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE on, the American protagonist is self aware and does not proclaim his rightness by following rules but by his right-minded intentions. PLATOON examines a circumstance where what was right stopped in Washington D.C. Whatever these guys do is going to be partly immoral by the standards they've been raised with. Survival is their primary goal and the bravest do not. The most unscrupulous or objective do. If you judge the characters by your own standards while they obviously don't have your advantages, you're not going to get the movie.
