RARA-AVIS: MPH or KMPH?

I was reading Rankin's Ressurection Men (a UK paperback) when I ran across this line: "Siobhan was in the outside lane, ignoring the regular roadside reminders that the limit on the bridge was fifty milesper hour."

I thought distance in the British Isles were measured in kilometers, excuse me, kilometres, not miles?
