I agree -- although I think Patrick overstates it some what. The 87th Precinct series is the only series that I can read consistently. In a way there is a sameness and yet they remain different enough. Most series turn into soap operas or predictable spins down the same old road after the third installment or so. To be completely honest, I'm not a fan of Evan Hunter's work or the Matthew Hope series which shows McBain (or Hunter) really wasn't committed to it and said as much in an interview.

The last several 87ths aren't so hot. The other 40 or so are good reads.
