Haven't actually read FOR WHOM THE BELLS TOLL (and I haven't
even seen the film, even though I vividly remember an
opportunity to see it on screen in 1990), but I have seen the
film that Joris Ivens directed from Hemingway's script,
called SPANISH EARTH, several times. It shows at least some
understanding of the Spanish situation and Hemingway writes
beautifully about the Spanish people. I think it's the only
film that Hemingway had a hand in - he even narrates it, with
actually a quite nice flat, hardboiled tone in his
voice.
There are some descriptions of Hemingway being more like a
tourist in the Spanish Civil War, though, at least in
Orwell's and Jason Gurney's memoirs of the war.
