To tie our Lawrence Block-theme to the recent discussion on Newton Thornburg, I see Block in his primer TELLING LIES FOR FUN & PROFIT has a short writeup on Thornburg. Block quotes Thornburg's description of a waitress in CUTTER AND BONE as an example of good characterization. Block goes on to say "if there's a bad sentence anywhere in the novel
[CUTTER AND BONE] I didn't notice it."
