It looks to me like rather than appealing to an "average",
the Man is more interested in "segments". A lot of research
and a lot of money goes into investigating each
segment.
And it's traditional to say that every generation is stupider
than the previous; I doubt it precisely because it has always
been said. Teachers say it of students, older people of
younger people, old actors of young actors, and so on. Very
suspect thinking.
