Following up on this discussion from Friday...in addition to the Alabama Public Television documentary someone mentioned, several books have covered these events [which included the assassination of Albert Patterson, state attorney general at the time and the person John McIntire played in the 1955 Phil Karlson film...that film was shot in Phenix City only a few years after the events depicted. To add some fiction content, as Wikipedia notes, "The character "Maggot" from E.M. Nathanson's novel The Dirty Dozen was from Phenix City".]

Margaret Ann Barnes, The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama
[1999; Barnes was a Georgia author who died recently and also author of Murder in Coweta County. More on this book at http://www.margaretannebarnes.com/Phenix_City.htm ]

Alan Grady, When Good Men Do Nothing: The Assassination of Albert Patterson [2003]

Strickland, Edwin and Gene Wortsman. Phenix City: The Wickedest City in America [1955; title comes from a Life magazine article that so labeled Phenix City]
