This sounds like the Detective Book Club, which published in
hard cover. Coincidentally, I found a box of these
collections yesterday. All the books were from the late
nineteen forties and the stories appeared to be uncut. I
pulled out the copies with Nightfall, by Goodis, Too Late For
Tears, by Roy Huggins, Dread Journey, by Dorothy Hughes, and
Benefit Performance, by Richard Sale.
