If nothing else, those sexually oriented novels were a great apprenticeship for a lot of writers, and a landing pad for other pros who had lost their markets. Many of them were not novels about sex, per se, but novels that included individuals who participated in sex, which is to say, most of us. Whatever the merits of any individual book, by the time Westlake and Block began writing under their own names, they had their voice, and it was created in the books for hire they wrote in the early sixties.
