Jim can give you a far more detailed account, but here's the
short answer until he gets to it. The Killer in the Rain
anthology is comprised of short stories that Chandler later
"cannibalized," as he put it, for his novels. As he had
reused the material (although greatly rewritten), Chandler
did not allow the stories to be reprinted during his
lifetime. Along with the story of the same title, No Crime in
the Mountain and, I think, another were used for Lady in the
Lake.
