Thanks for passing this sad news along Jim. I agree with your accessment. Gardner was a very talented writer with great range. His James Bond sendup series featuring the bumbling Boysie Oakes is quite funny and he also wrote some of the best serious fiction about the world of espionage. His novels featuring Herbie Kruger are a great achievement. If that wasn't enough, he wrote a grim little police series including the excellent A COMPLETE STATE OF DEATH (1969)and two carefully researched novels featuring Proessor Moriarty.

I always felt Gardner's work on the James Bond novels--fair or not-- limited his own reputation.
