In the first Parker book, Parker is walking into NYC across
like the Washington Bridge and Stark cuts into the POV of a
commuter who just think to himself "Boy, that guy looks
mean." Then its back to Parker and the commuter is never
heard from again. In like the second or third book, an
armored car robbery goes bad and Parker and maybe Handy dress
as Transportation workers to lay a detour for the escaping
double crosser. A guy and his girlfriend drive through the
roadblock and the girlfriend remarks to the boyfriend "boy,
that guy looks tough," and they are never head from again. I
guess Westlake wanted us to know that Parker is both mean and
tough and couldn't find a more artful way to do so.
