*************** Lots of different readings of the Bible. Personally, I like free will, but also significant to this discussion is the hardcore determinism of the early American Calvinists. James Fennimore Cooper panned it in Last of the Mohicans, but other American authors played to it in a very proto-noir sense. Examples would be Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables and Melville's Moby Dick.
