Stephen Greenleaf ended his series... only to bring it back. Constantine looked like he was ending the series, but brought in a sub as a protagonist, and the old guy was still present. I think the temptation to unend an ended series is very great. That cork doesn't stay put. I do think Willeford really did want to end the series.
