And while I'm at it, let me recommend Dog of God by Pinckney Benedict. It's out of print, and I don't think he ever published another novel, but it's a good one. I don't know that it necessarily qualifies as hard boiled, but it's a bout a barroom fighter who runs afoul of a twelve fingered drug lord in rural West Virginia. You should be able to pick it up cheap at a used bookstore.
