The book I value most in seeking out noir films is still Film
Noir: an Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style, edited
by Alain Silver. Got my first copy in '78 & with each
update the book expands its breadth. Very thorough and useful
as a reference book with lots of appendices and essays for
deeper reading.
