I haven't read too much by Ed McBain. This title, reprinted
by HHC, was an enjoyable read. It uses a twist on the P.I.
tale, where Matt Cordell , an ex-P.I. until he caught his
wife cheating, is a self-admitted bum from the Bowery. An old
pal from the old neighborhood calls on Matt to solve a petty
theft which quickly turns to murder. The mystery of the
killer isn't the strong point here. The jazz scenes are
first-rate. The story and protagonist remind me of Lawrence
Block's Matt Scudder.
