RARA-AVIS: Re:The Killing

One of the things that's interesting to me about this movie is that Sterling Hayden, who'd already starred in the "other" best caper movie ever made, THE ASPHALT JUNGLE, was the lead. Yet his character in THE KILLING, a strategist and planner as well as a specialist in armed violence, is so different from the simple country-boy "hooligan" he played in JUNGLE.

Hayden is always who my mind's eye casts as Parker when I read one of Richard Stark's novels, probably because of his starring roles in JUNGLE and KILLING. Much as Bogart came to emblematic of the hard-boiled PI after playing Spade in THE MALTESE FALCON and Marlowe in THE BIG SLEEP. Anyone else find that they do the same kind of mental casting when they read Stark? If not, who DO you mentally cast as Parker?
