I belive you are referring to the Killer's starring Ronald Reagan (in his final movie role) and Lee Marvin.

I remember that there was a lot of talent involved in this production--Jim Thompson wrote the screenplay with Kubrick based on Lionel White's novel. I think Hemingway was involved somehow, but the details escape me now.
