RARA-AVIS: did dope change noir writing?

I found this on a blog; it is old, but I wondered if this fits the criteria. Anybody know the book?

[09.19.05: Putnam editor Dan Conaway posted an interesting comment over the weekend. I'm moving it into the main post, because I'd love for editors, authors or agents reading the blog to do likewise if there's something they feel is missing from one of these posts. Not to mention that DOPE sounds like the kind of book our mystery columnist would love . . .

"NOT MANY SURPRISES?! I'm the editor, at Putnam, of one book on the Winter
'06 list that will (I predict) prove to be a wonderful surprise: Sara Gran's stunning genre-busting novel DOPE, set in New York City circa 1950. Imagine if Elmore Leonard had edited MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN... or if Raymond Chandler had been reincarnated as a 21st century woman."]

Best to all
