the choice of the name Ely as simply random if he hadn't also
managed to call himself a prophet. One way or another, you
and I agree that it's a great story. Everything beyond that
is of less consequence.
Hemingway said that any symbolism had to be an unplanned
coincidence in good writing, but he was lying. Good writing
often employs very purposeful symbolism.
