Funny you just mentioned this since I just re-watched the DVD
edition of the Jules Dassins film, which is one the best
film noirs ever from that glorious era...and your post led me
to open the Dell Publishing copy of the book I have with a
pix of Widmark and Tierney on the cover...This edition
(Dell#374 and his website tells me it dates back to Feb.
1950) has a glossary of the characters, then a section
called: What this novel is all about?...then title page
followed by list of chapters, then a glossary of words
starting with Ball-O-Clak: Walk.Take a ball-o-chalk means
scam.....etc...etc...finishing with a half page titled: Note
on Cockney Rhyming Slang with exactly the quote you
gave...but no P. Duncan analysis of course...
Thanks for the info on your edition, and interesting to see
how things connect... Montois de Dtroit...
